Would You Treat Your Best Friend the Way You Treat Your Body?

Apr 07, 2025

Let’s play a little game...

Imagine your best friend—someone you love, respect, and would do anything for. Now, picture yourself talking to them the way you talk to your own body.

Would you ever say things like:
❌ “You’re so disgusting

❌ “You’ll never be good enough.”

❌ “Why even bother? You always fail.”

Of course not!

You’d never tear them down, criticise them relentlessly, or make them feel worthless. So why is it okay to talk to yourself that way?

Too many of us treat our bodies like an enemy to be punished instead of a partner to be cared for. And that’s exactly what keeps us stuck in cycles of self-sabotage, shame, and frustration.
If you want negative self-talk to stop keeping you stuck, t’s time to shift your perspective.

The way you speak to yourself directly impacts your actions. When you constantly
criticise your body, here’s what happens:
❌ You believe you’re not worthy. Instead of making healthy choices out of love, you make them out of punishment—and that’s never sustainable.

❌ You stay stuck in extremes. You either go all in on diet and exercise or completely give up because you feel like you’re never “good enough.”

❌ You disconnect from your body. Instead of listening to hunger, energy, and emotions, you ignore your needs—leading to burnout, bingeing, and frustration.

So, let me ask again: Would you ever treat a friend like this? If not, then why do you accept it for yourself?

Even though it may seem hard, you can start treating yourself like someone you love.

βœ… Shift from punishment to partnership. Your body isn’t something to fix—it’s something to support. Instead of punishing yourself with ridiculous cardio workouts or restricting food, focus on nourishing and strengthening your body.

βœ… Talk to yourself like a best friend. Next time you catch yourself saying something negative, stop and ask: Would I say this to someone I love? If not, reframe it into something kind and constructive.

βœ… Celebrate small wins. Instead of only focusing on what’s “wrong,” acknowledge what’s right. Did you get outside for a walk? Choose a nutrient-dense meal? Prioritise sleep? Those things matter.

βœ… Give yourself grace. Perfection isn’t the goal—consistency is. Your best effort will look different every day, and that’s okay. Progress happens when you keep showing up, even when it’s messy.

If you’re tired of the cycle of self-criticism and want to build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with your body, it’s time to take action.
