There’s More to Self-Care than Taking It Easy

Apr 29, 2024

Self-care is more than just pampering; it's a holistic journey toward well-being that goes beyond pedicures and bubble baths. Let's explore relaxation techniques and mindful exercises to enrich your self-care routine and nourish your mind, body, and soul.

    1. Mindful Breathing: You can practice mindful breathing exercises just about anywhere to instantly reduce stress and center yourself. Breathe in deeply through your nose, exhale completely through your mouth. Consider thinking something like “positivity in, negativity out” as draw and release each time.
    2. Meditation Magic: Too many people dismiss meditation without really trying it. “I can’t just think of nothing,” they say. Or, “I’m just not good at sitting still.” But there’s so much rich insight and peace to be had. Start slowly. Try guided sessions or apps like Headspace. Or just focus on your breath, in and out, whenever your mind wanders (as it will).
    3. Gratitude Journaling: It’s AMAZING how powerful this trick is. Just write a short gratitude list in your journal every day. You’ll find it’s hard to feel completely down when you’re actively thankful.
    4. Nature Connection: Great thinkers throughout time, from early philosophers to your mom, knew this: You need to get outside regularly, feel the sun and wind and rain, smell the air… If you can find a park or get out into the wilderness a bit, that’s great. But sometimes you can find this connection in your own back yard.
    5. Yoga for Mind and Body: The ancient holistic practice combines physical postures, breathwork, and meditation. It enhances flexibility, strength, and mental well-being. In short: It makes you feel soooooo good.
    6. Unplug! Turn off social media and the news for at least a few hours each week. If possible, mute your instant messages, too. You might not realize now how conditioned you are to the constant distractions, but you can definitely do without almost all of them.
    7. Mindful Meals: Transform mere “eating” into a mindfulness experience. Pay attention to flavors, textures and smells. Acknowledge what it took to get the food in front of you. Be aware of what you’re eating and how it affects your body.
    8. Express Yourself: Creative activities bring joy in ways we can’t always explain. So, paint… write… make a craft… whatever it is that lets you bring life to something new and beautiful.
    9. Move Your Body Every Day. We spend so much time sitting – while working, driving, watching TV or reading. So, build movement into your life – through exercise at the gym, taking the dog for walks, playing with the kids, or just dancing around the house.
    10. Prioritize Sleep. Create a bedtime routine and sleep schedule. Turn off screens an hour before bed. Keep your room cool and dark. Let go of the idea that “rest” equals “lazy.” It’s an essential part of mental and physical health.

See? There’s so much more to it than just bubble baths and massages.

But you know what? Those are more than fine ways to treat yourself, too – so enjoy!
