The #1 Reason You Keep Falling Off Track (Hint: It’s Not Lack of Motivation!)
Mar 27, 2025
How many times have you told yourself, “I just need more motivation”?
We’ve been conditioned to believe that motivation is the key to success. That if we could just summon enough willpower, we’d never fall off track again. But the truth?
Motivation is fleeting.
It’s easy to feel inspired at the start of a new plan, but what happens on the days you’re tired, stressed, or just don’t feel like it?
That’s where discipline comes in.
Discipline isn’t about being perfect or pushing yourself to exhaustion. It’s about building systems that make success inevitable—whether you feel like it or not.
Think about brushing your teeth. Do you wake up every day feeling “motivated” to do it?
No.
You just do it because it’s part of your routine.
Health and fitness are two of my own personal biggest values. So, over the years, I've been able to make movement, and healthy eating just a regular part of my life. But even for me... do I always feel like going to the gym?... No.
But do I do it anyway?....Yes. Because I've developed the healthy habit to have the discipline to make it a non negotiable. I still give myself grace if I'm tired or sore, and some days I postpone a workout to the next day...but I never miss my 3 gym sessions a week routine.
You can create this for yourself too. You do it because it becomes part of your routine. That’s what we need to do with your healthy habits. Make them part of your routine. Part of your values.
Here’s how to build discipline that lasts:
- Make it automatic.
Instead of relying on willpower, attach new habits to things you already do. Want to drink more water? Have a glass first thing in the morning before coffee. Want to move more? Stretch while watching TV. - Lower the barrier to entry.
Motivation dies when things feel too overwhelming. Instead of committing to an hour-long workout, start with 10 minutes. Instead of a total diet overhaul, change one meal at a time. - Create an environment that supports you.
If junk food is always in sight, you’ll eat it. If your workout clothes are ready to go, you’re more likely to move. Make good choices the easy choices. - Expect resistance.
There will be days you don’t feel like it. That’s normal. But discipline means showing up anyway—even if it’s imperfect. - When you stop chasing motivation and start building habits, results become inevitable.
