How to Make and Stick with a Commitment to Health and Wellness
Oct 16, 2023People often ask me how they can make a commitment to their own health and wellness and stick to it.
It’s hard, they say – and I totally understand. Making a commitment to your health and wellness can feel like an uphill battle sometimes. Life gets hectic, and it's all too easy to place our own well-being at the bottom of the never-ending to-do list. But here's the truth, and I want you to really hear this:
It's not easier to do nothing. It's not cheaper. It's not more convenient. And it's definitely not selfish to invest in yourself.
In fact, it’s easier to do nothing and maintain the current state of affairs. But that path won't lead you to the vibrant, healthy life you deserve.
The secret to making a lasting commitment to your well-being begins with one fundamental question: What's your why?
Before you start planning what you’re going to do for your health… and where… and how much it will cost and how much time it will take… BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, YOU MUST KNOW YOUR WHY.
It’s what will get you started and it’s what will keep you going.
Let me share some inspiring examples:
- Angela wants to look better – not just for her sister’s wedding in two months, but permanently. That’s a powerful “why” – the urge to maintain our appearance and self-esteem.
- Helidi wants to manage her blood pressure and avoid the health issues that plagued her parents. There’s another awesome “why” rooted in the will to live.
- Abbey wants to keep up with her kids and set a shining example for them about and healthy living. Again: More awesomeness for the 'why'.
- My 'why' is because I saw my mum go through Breast Cancer and chemotherapy, and I don't want to go through what she went through...I want to live an active and fun life, having adventures and trying new things...like my recent Scuba Dive experience with Mike in the Cook Islands!
So, I want you to think about this. Maybe it comes to mind right away. Maybe it takes a few minutes of reflection or discussion with a special someone.
No one can judge your “why.” But don’t be afraid to share it with some people, which can add a whole new layer of motivation and accountability.
When you know why you’re exercising more, eating better, and realigning your priorities for your health, then it gives you that added push to keep going. It’s the cheerleader when no one’s around.
After you know your why, the rest falls into place.
You still have to do the work consistently over time. But it’s so much better!
