Biohacking Your Blood Sugar to Lose Belly Fat

You may ask, what even is biohacking?

Biohacking involves someone making incremental changes to their body, diet, and lifestyle to improve their health and well-being.

There are amazing new technologies coming out that can help us biohack, and even possibly reverse our biological age. However, there are many basic things we can do at home to start biohacking our health.

Balancing our blood sugar levels is one of these things.

This isn't just about avoiding diabetes; Balancing our blood sugar levels is a powerful strategy to lose stubborn belly fat and improve your overall health. Especially in women over 35 who's hormones are starting to change as they head into perimenopause and menopause.

Let me share a story of one of my clients, (let's call her Kate), and how she literally changed her life by learning how to balance her blood sugar levels.

Kate, a gorgeous, but tired 45-year-old woman, came to me frustrated with her persistent belly fat and fluctuating energy levels. Despite her best efforts with dieting and exercising, she wasn’t seeing the results she wanted. After a thorough consultation, we identified that Kate’s blood sugar levels were a key factor in her struggles.

Let me pause on Kate's story for a minute as I help you understand a few key ideas in the Blood Sugar-Belly Fat Connection:

🔍 Insulin Resistance: High blood sugar levels can lead to insulin resistance, where the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin. This not only promotes fat storage, particularly around the abdomen, but also leads to energy crashes and cravings.

🔍 Glycemic Index (GI): Foods with a high GI (like white bread and sugary snacks) cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, leading to insulin surges. Low GI foods (like whole grains and legumes) release sugar slowly, keeping insulin levels stable.

Let's get back to Kate's story, and how we biohacked her Blood Sugar Levels:

1. Nutritional Overhaul: We revamped Kate’s diet to include more fibre, healthy fats, and lean proteins. She started enjoying meals rich in leafy greens, avocados, nuts, and lean meats. This balanced approach helped stabilize her blood sugar and keep her feeling full longer.

2. Strategic Meal Timing: We experimented with intermittent fasting, which showed great results in improving her insulin sensitivity. However as Kate is over 40, it's important that she has a protein rich breakfast by no later than 10am, so we managed her fasting around this.

3. Exercise Routine: Kate added in strength training exercises. Her new workout routine boosted her muscle mass and improved her body’s ability to use insulin effectively.

4. Prioritizing Sleep: Quality sleep was a game-changer for Kate. Poor sleep disrupts insulin sensitivity, so we worked on creating a sleep-friendly environment and a bedtime routine. She aimed for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night.

5. Stress Management: Chronic stress can elevate cortisol levels, which in turn raises blood sugar. We incorporated mindfulness practices, yoga, and deep breathing exercises into Kate's daily routine, by adding tiny healthy habits that are easy to do, but just as easy not to do. Following my Healthy Habits Register made it really easy for Kate to add these into her routine.

Within a few months, Kate started noticing remarkable changes. Her energy levels became more consistent, her cravings reduced, and most importantly, she began losing the stubborn belly fat that had troubled her for years. She felt more in control of her body and health than ever before.

Some Practical Tips for You:

  1. Monitor Your Blood Sugar: Regular checks can help you understand how your body responds to different foods and activities. You can buy finger prick tests, or stay tuned for a week or two, and I'll let you know how I go with my new Continuous Glucose Monitor!
  2. Choose Whole Foods: Opt for unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods to keep your blood sugar stable.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain optimal blood sugar levels.
